Water Basin "Chozubachi" and "Tsukubai" History

Chozubachi and tsukubai have had a time honored place in Japanese gardens for centuries. Stone water basins or chozubachi originated in ancient Japanese shrines and temples for worshipers to wash their hands and mouth as a symbol of purification. The Japanese water basin originated as chozubachis, which were usually 16" or taller in height. Japanese tea masters later redesigned the bowls for Japanese tea gardens to the height of 12" or shorter to create the tsukubai. The tsukubai or crouching bowl was designed to humble guest and create the right state of mind in the Japanese tea garden before entering the tea house. Choosing A Basin Size
Choose a size that is appropriate to your garden and its surroundings. Also choose a size that is proportional to other nearby objects such as a granite lantern or tree. Visualize the items size and the appearance in its intended garden placement. To easily visualize the diameter, mark the ground with a circle of the size of the basin in which you are interested in. For reference we have included some basic suggestions. Our 16" basin is a nice size for small decks, small balcony gardens and small or narrow courtyards. Our 18" basin works nicely for small to medium gardens, entry ways and non-vast spaces. Our 2' basin is perfect for medium to very large gardens.
