kasu.jpg (37482 bytes)Choosing Carved Granite:
Carved granite lanterns, basins and sculptures are one the most recognized and visually stimulating element in a Japanese garden. Granite is a very dense, durable and hard natural stone. Items carved from granite will last a life time and many times passed on for many generations to come, thus when choosing granite select only high quality granite that is carved with high quality workmanship.

Choosing A Size:
Choose a size that is appropriate to your garden. Visualize the items size (both   height and width) and the appearance in its intended garden placement. A small garden with an oversized lantern will feel overbearing and a large garden with a lantern that is too small will feel un-proportional. If you are not sure, use objects around the home or garden as props to get a better feel for the size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Granite Stone Lanterns, Basins & Sculptures

  • What color is your granite? Our granite products are carved from the traditional white/gray (salt & pepper) granite stone with black pigments unless noted (i.e. beige granite).  A close up view of the actual color of our salt and pepper granite is shown above.

How do I lift the stone lanterns for set-up in my Japanese garden?  Each lantern or basin is shipped in a wooden crate. Most granite lanterns can be lifted with two or more people or the crate can be placed on a dolly and moved. Most lanterns are usually made up of 3-6 separate pieces (base, pedestal, shaft, housing support, lamp housing, roof & cap) so although a lantern may weigh 200 lbs. total, the individual pieces of a 200 lb lantern may only weigh 10-80 lbs. each.

  • Are your stone granite items hand carved? Yes, all our granite is hand carved using both hand and modern tools.

  • What does pre-drilled for electrical mean? Granite lanterns that state they are "pre-drilled with a hole for electrical" means that the lantern is drilled with a approximately a 3/4" hole up through the inside of the granite lantern up to the light box. This is a wonderful feature for it allows you to install low voltage electrical wiring if you should decide to enlighten in your garden! Electrical wiring is not included but can be found at all hardware stores in the outside landscape lighting section.

  • Are your Yukimi lanterns pre-drilled for electrical for other companies are not or charge extra? Yes, we do pre-drill our yukimi lanterns for we feel it is a nice option if you should want to install electrical lighting and we do not charge extra for this feature.
